Seeing Heaven, Smelling Hell

Sorry it took a bit this week - here is the question I have for you all...how do you develop healthy spiritual appetites?

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
- 1 Corinthians 3:1–2

  1. To develop a healthy spiritual appetites, you have to look at how any appetite develops.

I didn't like beer as a kid. When I became older, I began drinking beer to "fit in". After drinking less expensive beer for a while, I sampled some premium beer and really liked the taste. Now one of my favorite things to do is, on special occasions, purchase a premium beer that I haven't tasted before and try it. I am rarely disappointed.

Applying this to spiritual appetites goes like this. If you read the Bible, you will develop a hunger for it. If you serve at church, you want to serve more. If you go to bible study, you will likely want to make that a regular thing. If you perform acts of service, you will be inclined to serve in this capacity more often. If you pray regularly and listen to God, you will want to spend more time with Him. Even regularly attending church becomes a spiritual appetite.

Your spiritual appetite has enemies, however. The enemy does not want you to do anything to develop a spiritual appetite. He wants to distract you from such things and feed your appetite for the world. The more destructive the better. It is imperative to develop a prayer life to correspond to any other spiritual activity so that the Lord will be better able to guide you.
